One of my major interests is in the systematics and ecology of a group of simple mycetozoans known as protostelids. Morphological and molecular studies show that this group is related to the more commonly studied myxomycetes and dictyostelid cellular slime molds. The group is an ideal model system for studying the evolution of amoebal morphology. I am currently in the process of writing a reclassification of the group. Several of my students, both graduate and undergraduate, and I have begun tackling questions concerning the habitats and microhabitats in which protostelids are found and what factors affect whether protostelids will colonize a given substrate. We developed a standardized technique for collecting protostelids which allows us to gather quantitative data on protostelids. We be begin a study with Dr. Don Hemmes on the protostelids of Hawaii to see if there is any difference in the diversity of protostelids between native forests and disturbed sites. I am looking for students who are interested in the study of protostelid systematics and ecology. I also am interested in the systematics of the myxomycetes and the sexual development of ascomycetes.
