Graduate School FAQ

This is a two part process: Please read carefully!

a) Apply to the Graduate School - Graduate School application form. Any questions you may have are probably addressed on the Graduate School Homepage.  Briefly, the Graduate School will need the completed "Application for Admission" form along with a $40.00 non-refundable application fee ($50.00 for international applicants), and two official copies of the student's transcript(s) from each college or university attended.

b) Apply to the Dept of Biological Sciences - it's FREE!

  1.  Fill out a  Graduate Assistant application form
  2. Have your GRE scores (Verbal, Quantitative, Analytical)
  3. Provide three letters of recommendation
  4. We require that you have a faculty sponsor: please see the department website and contact individual faculty you would like to work with.
  5. Apply and submit required documents to the Department of Biological Sciences through UA Connect

Details of OUR graduate program requirements can also be found >here and more information concerning our department is found here.

You must do both a) and b) before you can be accepted into the Biological Sciences Graduate Program.

Instructions for International students can be found on the Graduate School website.

On the departmental directory page, and/or by contacting faculty members directly.

We offer teaching assistantships, research assistantships, and, on occasion, special fellowships. Research assistantships are offered by individual faculty members, so it is often best for you to ask faculty members about support for graduate students. For qualified applicants, supplements to teaching and research assistantships are available through the Graduate School in the form of Doctoral Fellowships.

Please see below about teaching assistantships.

Typically, these are 50% appointments (which works out to be approximately twenty hours per week).  TAs are assigned various duties associated with teaching our lab courses.  Duties vary depending on the course, and might include lecturing, lab prep, lab clean-up, and/or grading lab assignments.  Assistantships come with a stipend and tuition waiver.

To be considered for a  Teaching Assistantship, you must complete your application by:

January 15 - for Fall semester

November 15 - for Spring semester.

Other applications are considered on a rolling basis.
